MURPHY, Isaac - 1st Reconstruction Governor of Arkansas; Delegate to Arkansas
Secession Convention; Civilian Aide to General Herron in 1862; born 16 Oct 1799 near Pittsburgh, PA;
son of Hugh Murphy, paper manufacturer; married to Angelina Lockhart; father of 6 daughters;
migrated to Fayetteville, Washington Co., AR in 1834; was an educator and lawyer; during the
Secession Convention Murphy cast the sole vote to keep Arkansas in the Union despite
considerable pressure; Murphy was appointed Governor by President Lincoln after the fall
of Little Rock; Murphy's administration is noted for the lack of
any spirit of recrimination, malfeasance, or corruption which the later Carpetbag regimes that
succeeded him could never claim; he took the helm of a government
with no money and left it with a surplus and a record of moderation; the Murphy administration
was a model for what Reconstruction could have been had Lincoln lived; it is fairly obvious
to all observers that Murphy had the best interests of Arkansas at heart and both former
Unionists and Confederates recognized him as a noble, courageous, and good-hearted man;
At the end of his term Governor Murphy quietly retired to his home in Washington Co. where
he farmed, practiced law part-time, and served as a backup judge on occasion; he died at home
on 08 Sept 1882 and is buried at Huntsville, AR; his legacy and courage are remembered by
few modern-day Arkansans.
