 HINDMAN, Thomas Carmichael - General, Commander of
Trans-Mississippi Department, CSA; born 28 Jan 1828, assassinated 28 Sep 1868 in Helena, AR; buried Maple
Hill Cemetery in Helena, AR; Hindman moved to Arkansas from Mississippi to take advantage of a friendlier
atmosphere for his political aspirations; Hindman's oratory and political skills enabled him
to unseat the ruling political "family" taking a Congressional seat and placing his candidate in
the Governor's chair just prior to the war; early in the war General Hindman served with the
Army of Tennessee and was seriously wounded; General Hindman took over the Trans-Mississippi Department and upon
arrival discovered that he had no troops, no
artillery, and no ammunition or powder with an enemy army of 30,000 within striking distance of
his headquarters at Little Rock; Hindman undertook a series of stern measures to regain control
of the situation which earned him the enmity of certain citizens of the State, the remembrance
of which unfairly stains his record to this day; his actions were instrumental in saving Little
Rock from the enemy for another year; citizens of Little Rock, chafing under his emergency
measures appealed to Richmond for him to be replaced which was done; Hindman had been eager
to move over to the offensive and by manipulation and ignoring his newly appointed superior
took his hammered together force into northwest Arkansas and brought on the Battle of Prairie
Grove; Hindman's strategic plan was sound and quite possibly would have succeeded had he remained
in his offensive frame of mind instead of deciding to remain in a defensive position as battle neared; his
decision allowed the enemy to combine their two smaller forces and bring about battle on their
terms; Hindman was forced to withdraw thus ending any hope of regaining northwest Arkansas;
he fled to Mexico at the end of hostilities but returned a short time later; Hindman was one
of the few who did not receive a pardon and was under indictment when he returned to the
State; Hindman set out on a new campaign to revive the Democratic Party and had some initial
success at convincing newly freed Black Arkansans to cooperate with the Democrats; he was
shot in the neck through his living room window in front of his children by unknown assailants;
the assassination remains a mystery to this day
