CROOM, Wiley - Pvt, Co. K, 21st Ark Inf, CSA; wounded at Corinth, MS and carried
the ball with him until his death; as doctors were strapping him down to amputate he grabbed
his pistol and threatened to shoot anyone who tried to proceed and the head surgeon relented; recovered and
captured at Big Black Station outside of Vicksburg on 17 May 1863; sent to Fort Delaware Prison and
then Point Lookout Prison; he was exchanged and returned to Arkansas; he re-enlisted and served under Captain
Wiley Jones; mustered out at Jacksonport on White River; his father was a Union sympathizer, he stated that
his father was a bluebelly but he felt he ought to be loyal to his State; built a grist mill and
cotton gin in the area that is now Oxford; served in the Arkansas State Legislature in the 1894-96
term; died on 28 Mar 1910; buried in the cemetery at Oxford which he donated the land for; his wife Mrs. S.J.
Croom applied for a pension in 1917 in Izard Co., AR
